On July 24th, Piedmont University junior Jason Aussin was enjoying a round of golf with his father, Tony, and grandfather, Jose. Just after Jose made an impressive shot, he collapsed. "My grandpa had a great shot onto the green. We thought he was celebrating, looked over [and] he collapsed and started turning purple,” Jason recalls, “Checked his breathing, checked for a pulse, nothing."
Realizing that his grandfather was having a heart attack, Jason rushed to help him using skills he learned training for his summer job as a lifeguard at Alpharetta City Pool. He immediately started performing CPR and instructed his dad to assist him. "Immediately, I knew what to do,” Jason says, “I turned to my father and said, 'Hey I need you on breaths. I'll do the CPR.'"
Thanks to his grandson’s quick thinking, Jose is on the road to recovery. He’s set to leave the hospital any day and is eager to get back on the golf course. And he’s incredibly proud of his son and grandson, saying, "It's like they're professional doctors. They saved my life!" Jason is now trying to encourage others to learn CPR and already has his mom and dad on board. "If you learn it, the worst case scenario is that you don't have to use it,” he says, and then adds, “Who knows? I was not expecting to save my grandpa."
