Ever since he was a child, community has been important to Cyrus Ausar. So it was only natural that supporting those in the community with the greatest need would be part of the mission of his restaurant, Greatness Cafe in Massillon, Ohio. If a child comes into Greatness and gives the silent signal of putting their hand over their heart to signify that they’re hungry, they will get a free meal.
Ausar started the policy after noticing some kids would come in with their friends and not eat. "There are kids who come in and act like they're not hungry, when really they are," he says. "I've lived that and seen it." Ausar says he’ll continue the policy for as long as he’s able.
Last week, Greatness Cafe got a little boost in their effort to provide free meals to kids in need. After feeding two kids at the cafe chicken sandwiches, they left and returned with an adult who questioned the policy in disbelief. When Ausar explained the policy to the man, he broke down in tears and tipped $5-hundred! Ausar shared the story on social media, which has led to an outpouring of support. He’s been blown away by the kindness, saying, “I am extremely appreciative of all the people who’ve reached out to help and donate towards a cause to feed our community.”
